colourpop!

a colour bass subgenre that mixes the good parts of hyperpop, dariacore and ofc, colour bass into one candy-flavoured package!!!

what is colourpop, rlly?

no, colourpop (or colorpop) is not all abt makeup or cosmetics—if u search online. bc as how i said earlier, THIS is a colour bass subgenre.

the base concept

it mixes:

  • the sound designing techniques of colour bass (zynaptic pitchmap or morph, xynth audio chroma, vocodex, etc etc.);
  • the metallic and distorted drums from dariacore;
  • the catchy melodies from hyperpop (and don't u 4get the vocals!)

into a pot to make melodic yet choatic subgenre of colour bass!!!

the aesthetic

well smth bright and ofc colourful would better fit the genre (like candycore, webcore, scenecore or maybe even glitchcore i think), but remember: colourpop does not have any barriers, in the context of specific tempos or 'visual styles', bc u can make a so good sounding colourpop song abt breakup or some other theme and have some sort of dark aesthetic in it, it's js in the sound designing and techniques that u should use from colour bass to make it sound melodic instead of js loudness.

general tempo (maybe??) and other info

hmm… maybe 140-200 bpm or smth

yes, colourpop can get fast so pls dont make it too messy

influences

no, no, this subgenre was NOT made outta scratch: it was inspired by originally mainstream hyperpop music (charli xcx, ag cook, sophie and more), and how skybreak mixed colour bass and hybrid trap music to make a subgenre called 'colour trap', before the dariacore shenanigans (leroy, xaev and more soundcloud hyperflip/dariacore artists or so) peeled in.

faq abt colourpop

q: if colourpop can be anything i want, so.. it can sound smth like a 4/4 beat?

a: were u talking abt house music? bc ik, colourpop doesn't have 'barriers', but there are some no-nos to it (so it doesn't sound like another genre or like smth generic or 'samey', which is ANOTHER problem colour bass had):

if u were mentioning a double-time tempo for the drums/beat (like in house): no, unlike most edm genres that aren't either dubstep or its branches (or even modern ukg), the drums aren't supposed to be in double-time, it's HALF-TIME.

but some exceptions do apply ofc :) for example, if in a part of a song ur trying to elevate some hype by tryna add elements from other genres (e.g: 120 has a trance/speed house section at the end of the post-drop, with some colourpoppy stuff in it). and that's a good thing to do, so ur sound aint like someone else's or fall in the trap of accidentally making the track meh (after all, this is what buildups are for!!) or even worse, generic.

q: aside from colourpop being a subgenre.. what is it, rlly?

a: it's not only js a genre. yeah, it's an art form too!

bc with oh-so good and catchy songwriting, along with the sound designing, there is a balance between the both (smth colourpop addresses from the problems that hold back colour bass from being a popular edm genre). so that means colourpop is not js abt the drop—it's also abt the words u put in the lyrics, the emotion, and ofc, the vibe!

and if u put those two things along with the mostly happy aesthetic of the genre, as said before, it turns into an art form, not only a musical genre that u can listen or dance to.

q: who's the pioneer of colourpop?

a: the foundation comes from the colour bass scene chime and a lot of ppl from it left behind (yeah, chime's doing smth more uk-dub inspired), beyond js hyperpop (see the influences part!!). bc after all, the context of inventing 'colourpop' is very similar to how future bass was born: some producer named 'cashmere cat' laid down the cutesy foundation for the genre, while hybrid trap and aggressive dubstep was taking over the edm scene—while with colourpop, it's almost the same: i invented a melodic subgenre derivated from colour bass, hyperpop and its branches while my fav producers were tryna make smth that is nothing but noise. that's what i'm tryna say.

q: any songs that define the 'colourpop' subgenre?

a: tho '120' hasn't released yet (the original colourpop song, one that rlly defines colorpop), i do have a colourpop remix of a redshot song 4 u to listen, so u have a glimpse for how colourpop's supposed to sound (ig)

oh, and yknow st4lker? it has some colourpoppy stuff in the background!!! so yeah, go check it out too

q: anything else abt colourpop?

well if u ever thought abt electro-pop and thought hyperpop is the same: no, it's not the same, k??? bc electro-pop is very commercial, or to be more specific, 'radio-friendly', unlike hyperpop. bc i heard abt that the producers from pc music and some hyperpop artists too (like 100 gecs - it's a band ok?? - and maybe even charli xcx) criticizes commercialism and consumerism, sometimes in a satirical or sarcastic way.

and i also heard abt colour bass producers that left the scene (like skybreak) bc they felt like they werent making music for themselves (but for an audience, js to make money)

these two thingies is what colourpop addresses: colorpop is not a subgenre that was 'made to sell' or made to please a specific, sometimes '6-second attention span audience' (which is the problem of dariacore). it's made to have fun while still being honest abt urself and being melodic! and u can be honest not ONLY with sound-design, u can put that honesty in lyrics and in some sort of character of that track ur making (for example, colorpop doesnt need to sound completely clean, u can throw some distortion on it too)
